AUSTRALIAN BUTTERFLY SANCTUARY
Location: 8 Rob Veivers Dr, Kuranda QLD 4881
Cairns wild life, from an attraction perspective, often seems dominated by the top of the food chain. In tranquil contrast to this is the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, home to many local varieties, including the electric blue Ulysses. Be charmed by the delightful butterflies as you observe them in a natural setting. The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is conveniently located in the heart of Kuranda.
Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Rainforestation Nature Park, Wildlife Habitat and Cairns ZOOM & Wildlife Dome have a locals Annual 4 Park Pass. The family pass I purchased was only $130. There are also passes available for individuals. Visit www.capta.com.au/local-four-park-pass/ for details.
DAINTREE RIVER CRUISE CENTRE
Got some spare time on the weekend and looking for something interesting to do? We headed to the Daintree River and did a 1 hour tour with Daintree River Cruise Centre, for less than the cost of going to the movies. The locals’ price we paid for a family of 4 was $50 and it was a great little trip down the river. Saw numerous interesting birds and several crocodiles. The staff were extremely knowledgeable and really courteous with complimentary tea, coffee, cordial and biscuits. A great way to see this part of the Daintree. www.daintreerivercruisecentre.com.au
RAINFORESTATION NATURE PARK
Location: 1030 Kennedy Hwy, Kuranda QLD 4881
The Army Duck Rainforest Tour was a highlight during our visit to Rainforestation. These engaging vehicles are the perfect way to experience rainforest flora and fauna as they effortlessly transverse the slippery tracks then launch into the lake for a unique amphibious cruise. The Wildlife Park features koalas, dingos, wallabies, reptiles, crocodiles and even a Tasmanian devil!

SMITHFIELD MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK
Location: McGregor Rd, Smithfield QLD 4870
The Smithfield Mountain Bike Park is located on McGregor Rd Smithfield a few hundred metres past the JCU entrance on the right hand-side. It is just before AJ Hackett. If you are pretty comfortable on a bike and can handle the odd bump then it is well worth giving it a go. You do not need a great mountain bike to check it out as the tracks range from easy to advanced and are clearly marked. A good tip is to take a photo of the map in the car park so you can refer to it throughout your ride. Entry is free. If you decide to get into this popular sport or just want to see some maps before you hit the trails visit www.cairnsmtb.com
